Spring Weather

I am a bad blogger, it’s already the middle of February and I haven’t posted much. We had some good weather recently, which is a double-edged sword – we need the rain, but the sun and warm was nice giving us some time to get some work done around the grove. We are fully in planning mode for the growing season and have several plans for the coming summer.

First, we have pruned the fruit trees pretty severely – they were very overgrown. It’s our first time pruning so we are hoping we didn’t go too severe. We decided to buy a chipper shredder instead of buying all the trimmings to make some mulch.

Next, we cleaned up the front flower beds. There were way too many ornamental grasses chocking out the bulbs and other annuals. The daffodils are already starting to bloom.

We are planning on doing some repair work to the greenhouse, it’s a nice greenhouse and will give us a head start of some of the more warm weather garden plants – however, some of the supports are rotted and the glass barely held in place. We are planning on replacing some of the glass with plastic. We didn’t have much in the greenhouse last spring, but what we did ended up dying from the heat in early June. We need to watch that better this year.

The garden beds are rotted and falling apart. They are a bit too close together are far too big. We are planning on making the aisles a little larger and splitting each bed into two separate beds for a total of six-twelve foot garden beds rather than three 30 foot beds.

Lastly – we took a beekeeping class from Glorybee and have ordered two Nuc’s to start a couple of beehives. It doesn’t look like much – be picked out the location for the two hives and are in the process of getting everything in order.

Look forward to a more specific post on our start into the beekeeping world shortly.
