Our two African Gray Geese were a year old in April. They have been interesting and at times frustrating. We handled them quite often when they were young in an attempt to help them become more friendly. However, as they have aged, they have become…. geese.

Here’s a reminder of what they looked like in April 2019:

And now:

Frik and Frak April 2020

Not only have they put on weight, grown-up 21/2 feet – they have matured. We definitely have a gander (Frak) and goose (Frik) pair. Frik started laying eggs in the first part of April and is totally clueless about what to do with them. She buries them under leaves, sheep’s wool (from a blanked), sawdust shavings, or whatever. She is grouchy and that spreads to Frak.

Goose eggs – Frik usually buries these

We aren’t sure that Frak really knows what to do with Frik in the err – goose population standpoint. He has become much more protective and very (I mean extremely) loud. He will hiss, bite, and batter with his wings if we pick him up.

Hopefully, the spring hormones will pass and they will settle down this summer. We aren’t really interested in goslings so no issue from our standpoint if they pass this phase for another year.

Goose eggs

We have attempted to contain them in a pen – otherwise, they eat the flowers around the house and attack the dog, the mailman, the UPS driver, our son, visitors… They are however great escape artists and it’s been a challenge keeping them in. Time for pen fencing upgrade!
